Michael VIII Palaeologus, 1261-1282. Trachy (Bronze, 27 mm, 2.07 g, 6 h), Thessalonica. Large patriarchal cross in center; in the upper angles of the cross, stars; in the lower angles, fleur-de-lis flanked by pellets. Rev. Michael VIII, on the left, standing facing, wearing crown with pendilia and loros, holding labarum in his right hand, and St. Demetrius, on the right, beardless, nimbate and in military attire, standing facing, holding castle with three towers, surmounted by fleur-de-lis, with both hands. DOC 155. SB 2299. Extremely rare. Light areas of weakness and with some edge cracks, otherwise, about very fine.
